Microwave Dough Art

  • 4 c All-purpose flour
  • 1 c Salt
  • 1 1/2 c Hot water

Mix together the flour, salt, and hot water.

Knead dough 6 - 8 minutes. Roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters into desired shapes. Place on wax paper on glass tray; with a toothpick, make several holes in each piece to let air escape, then microwave on high for about 2 minutes. Time will vary according to the size of the ornaments.

When baked, allow to cool before decorating.

Give Mother's Day coupons that entitle her to things you think she'd enjoy. Cut out little cardboard hearts and write the messages on them. Some ideas are:
"One Whole Week of doing the Dishes with NO Complaints"
"Rake the Leaves"
"Clean my Room"
"One Kids-free Day"
"A few hours of time alone" for a bubblebath and nap. You can buy her a small bottle of bubble bath to go along with the coupon.
"One Free Car Wash"
You get the idea! Use your imagination, I'm sure there's lots of stuff your mom would find very special to them.

Surprise your mom on mother's day by secretly tidying up your room, then thinking up some excuse to get her to look into your room. That will mean a lot to her.

Volunteer to do your homework without being told..

Feed and walk the dog or clean the bird cage

Make Homemade Mother's Day Cards by cutting our words from old magazines and newspapers and then combining them to make special messages to tell mom how much you care. Paste your message on a big heart cut from red construction paper.

Draw your mom a picture on construction paper. Add stickers if you like.

Write a poem especially for your mom telling her how she means to you.

Write mom a letter starting with the words "I Love You Because" in big red letters .... then fill in the rest yourself in your normal writing. If you have access to a computer, you can make the letter really fancy.

Patchwork Flowerpot

Collect assorted colorful scraps of material. Cut them into different-sized shapes and sizes. Glue the material, overlapping, onto the outside of a flowerpot. Plant your mom's favorite flower in the flowerpot.

Write the following verse on a small piece of pink construction paper. Tape a teabag onto the construction paper and place in your mom's favorite tea cup

"I try my best in every way
To be extra sweet on Mother's Day,
But if you get upset with me
Relax and have a cup of tea!"

Special Recipes to Make for Mother's Day

Make Mother's Day cookies by preparing a favorite sugar cookie recipe and using different shaped cookie cutters: hearts, X, O, cupid, lips (use your imagination) . Top with red or white icing, red hots, candy hearts, Hershey kisses, etc.

Make a heart-shaped cake for Mother's Day. Just bake a two-layer cake using a favorite recipe (one layer in an 8" round pan, and one in a 8" square pan. When cooled thoroughly, cut the round cake in half. Place the square cake in a diamond shape and place each semi-circle against the top sides of the triangle to resemble a heart. Cover the entire cake with red, white, or pink frosting. Put on the finishing touches by either using candy hearts, Hershey kisses, cake decorations, or writing romantic messages such as "I love you", a cute saying or poem (use your imagination).
Note: Since the cake will be oversized, make a platter by covering a large piece of cardboard with tinfoil.

Make waffles and then use cookie cutters to cut them into heart shapes. Decorate with fresh sliced strawberries, sliced from top to bottom so they resemble small hearts, and sprinke with a little powdered sugar.

Make pancakes by placing different sized heart-shaped cookie cutters on the griddle and pouring in the pancake batter. As soon as the pancakes start to set and take the shape of the hearts remove the cookie cutters. Make mom a few fried eggs using the same method.

Serve mom breakfast in bed. Place a single flower in a small vase, pour a cup of coffee or tea, have the morning paper or her favorite book, etc on the side of the tray along with your Mother's Day card. Be sure to make breakfast for the rest of the family and don't forget to do the dishes afterwards  : )

After breakfast let mom just relax, read a book, watch televison, do gardening, take a hot bubblebath, whatever it is that she would really enjoy doing.

Another alternative to breakfast in bed would be to take mom out for a nice Sunday brunch.

If you decide to make mom a special dinner for Mother's Day, use cloth napkins complete with napkin rings. Buy a flower arrangement for the centerpiece. Place a few unscented candles on the table to make the occasion even more special for mom.

If you don't feel up to cooking dinner just take her out to a nice restaurant. Be sure to make reservations beforehand.
